Cause and Effect
Construct a device/structure that is operational. The operational component must be devised for
a human to perform. In other words, in
order for the sculpture to work, a human must operate it. And the operation must cause a change/shift
in the sculpture. Puppetry, pulling, pushing, sweeping, pedaling, putting, pouring,
weighing, dragging, turning, stirring, sitting, throwing, stretching. Harness, pulleys, sand, water, rope, wood,
rubber. Materials are your choice. No size limits.
What to put on your blog:
At least 3 professional images of sculpture.
A video of the human operating the sculpture.
A statement about the work.
Research (can be imagery and/or audio and/or text). At least 3 forms of research.
30-Foot Narrative
30 sculptures, up to 15 may be repeated
Installed on west lawn.
No size restrictions, but keep in mind how the individual scale of each piece can visually communicate content.
Each sculpture needs to have a display/platform.
Materials are your choice.
What to put on your blog:
At least 6 professional images of the finished work.
A video – does not include a person – focus on the
work. If you want, make a second video
that includes someone walking the line.
A statement about the work.
Research (can be imagery and/or audio and/or text). At least 3 forms of research.
Plaster, Phase 1 and
Phase 2
Phase 1 – experiment with making solid forms, sanding and
including found objects.
Make at least 10 plaster sculptures. No size restrictions.
Materials: Plaster (provided, but feel free to purchase your own additional bucket), sander block (needed to sand plaster - can get at Home Depot, suggest two different grits), dust mask (provided for you in the sculpture studio), found objects
and/or materials (you will need to gather - anything goes here).
Phase 2 – Select at least 5 plaster pieces to be part of a
larger sculpture. Idea for larger
sculpture is your choice. However, in
class we will discuss everyone’s plaster pieces so as to offer
each of you possible ideas. Keep in
mind, “larger”does not necessarily mean scale,
- it also implies concept. No limits on
scale – only that you will be adding other/more components/materials to the
already completed plaster pieces.
Materials and processes are your choice, as such decisions will
influence/determine your intent for the visual work.
