Sculpture I, Projects and Readings, Summer 2017

  • Project titles appear below. Search the category list on the right to get started on research. Each project title is listed in the right column.
  • Research not limited to the few bits of info I posted for you.
  • Feel free to search my Pinterest pages where I keep many examples of sculpture work.
  • Collect and Display, Look and Listen, Expose and Comment require in class presentations. Requirements for presentation handed out hard copy and posted on CANVAS.
  • Grading criteria for visual work, artist statements and professional images, one page papers and small sculptures made in response to readings in syllabus.

RISK and RESPOND
Challenge:
  • Using only newspaper, masking tape, clear packing tape, plastic bags and string/thread/rope/wire/yarn/chain construct a three-dimensional structure that can be suspended from the ceiling.  May use one or all of the materials.
  • Ideas about color/tone should be developed into the overall concept of the piece. No limits on how to apply color or how much color.
  • Final solution must have height, width and depth.
  • Height should be at least 5'.

COLLECT and DISPLAY
Challenge:
  • Use no more than a total four (4) materials to create a collection of 10 objects. Note that different colors of one material count as separate materials. For example, blue and red paint = 2 materials.
  • Size of objects can vary.
  • Design and construct a free standing form to display/hold/contain 10 sculptures. Materials for display are your choice and not limited.
  • There needs to be a conceptual relationship between the 10 objects and the free standing form.

LOOK and LISTEN
Challenge:
  • Create a sculpture that incorporates sound.
  • Materials are your choice.

EXPOSE and COMMENT
Challenge:
  • Content of this sculpture will explore a social issue and express your opinion toward the issue.
  • Materials are your choice.

Each reading requires a one page paper. Typed, single spaced, times roman, 12 point, 1 inch margin, two line header. Do not summarize.
Each reading requires you to make a small, three-dimensional object in response to the reading content.
